Finding the Most Valuable Data Feature
MVDF
I’m straight up stealing this idea (including some of the data descriptions) from the brilliant Get Goalside newsletter, which, if you’re interested in sports data, you should read, even if football’s not your thing.
Mark Thompson’s built an app where you…
Choose what types of football (/soccer) data are most important in a 'THIS' vs 'THAT' contest, and find out what really matters most to you. And to the rest of the crowd!
And because that sounds like exactly my cup of tea I decided to have a go at replicating it (pretty much 1 to 1) for hockey. Some of these features exist with data providers already, some probably haven’t made it over from football yet:
A few split-second decisions later you can check in on your rankings:
Incidentally:
This might be because hockey data hasn’t seen much tracking data publicly available, but it was quite tough coming up with alternative language for the running speeds in football.
Walk / Jog / Run / Spring seem to make sense for running, but what the hell are the skating equivalents?
Anyway, have fun. If I get enough feedback, I might write about some of the decisions the crowd made.
